Hi, I'm Steve

I'm a graphic designer, engineer, and fine artist. Which basically means that I drink coffee and I make things.

Fully caffeinated and fueled by my love for the arts and user-centered design, I've spent decades helping businesses of all shapes and sizes build their dreams and realize their goals.

From unique visuals that cement a brand into a market's mind-space to developing technology that no one has seen before, my award-winning art and design skills, vast toolkit of programming languages, and extensive experience are always ready for the task.

Web & User Experience DesignWeb & User Experience Design

Visual storytelling via user-centered experiences

I've been designing online experiences since before the world wide web was released to the public, as a natural extension to my work in the interactive arts and as a print designer. Craftsmanship is key to me, and I believe that every form, color, and moment - no matter how small - work collectively to define how the user engages a design and what they ultimately take away from it.

Logos & Brand Identity

The Unique Essence of a Venture

I was fortunate enough to be mentored by marketing legend Jay Chiat in the late 90's. During that time he drilled into me that "a brand is the smell, the color, everything leading to the thought that represents a company or product in the mind of its market."

In other words, a brand is much more than just a unique mark. It is the embodiment of a company or product; the thought that lingers even when the brand is out of sight, and if executed correctly, it becomes the subtle measure against which all competing thoughts are compared.

An underground club with faux gambling and a high-tech boudoir theme

Lust wasn't your normal nightclub. It featured all-night faux gambling and catered to the after-hours San Francisco night-life scene. The solution to their brand identity featured a high-tech boudoir theme and a logo that was juicy and a little bit naughty.

Cybergold Identity

Giving form to one of the internet's first digital currencies

After trying several design agencies and freelancers, Cybergold asked me to take a crack at their logo and brand image. The solution was to create an image evocative of international currency and blend it with forms that suggested solidity and security. It was a hit; the company ended up plastering it on everything from public buses to candy. I was also able to increase their conversion rates by 18%.

Blüm

Capturing a line of Oakland streetwear

Fashion designer Brenna Dean approached me to design a label for a clothing line she was working on. She wanted something along the lines of an "edgy flower."

Having to work without ever being able to see the clothing line, and relying upon intuition alone. I was apprehensive about showing her the new logo. But fears were set aside when she screamed with delight; it seems that she had decided to incorporate a gun motif into many of the prints. The logo, bearing an unfolding "gun-flower" was, in her words, "perfect."

SunSynchronous

Capturing an aerospace subsidiary

SunSynchronous, a subsidiary of a company that developed satellite telemetry software for the aerospace industry, needed a logo that was bold and evocative of cutting edge technology without appearing cliche. My solution was to wrap an object in space with the iconic ground track pattern of an orbiting satellite that is in a sun synchronous orbit. The font treatment was selected to be reminiscent of a museum display in order to convey an established sense of stability and permanence.

The client appreciated the design so much that elements of it became incorporated into their parent company's main site and logo.

Design Arts

Visually Communicating Ideas, Experiences, and Narratives

I began my design career working solely in print, back in the days before desktop publishing was a thing. Over the years I've designed everything from business cards and annual reports to magazine layouts and apparel prints. If it can have ink applied to it, chances are I've designed something for it.

Vale Felis

Nightclub promotional marketing communication

"Vale Felis" - which in Latin roughly translates to "Goodbye Kitty" - was an underground nightclub with a tongue-in-cheek pirate theme. In addition to the brand and logo, I also designed their marketing materials and promotional merchandise - everything from coffee mugs to Christmas cards.

Digital Media

The Unique Essence of a Venture

I first began producing digital assets in early 90's. Primarily for video games and personal art projects at first, and then later everything from photo restorations to editorial illustrations and marketing communications. In addition to my own personal style, I have to date I have been able to mimic any style requested of me. I am also able to develop novel styles to match specific requirements. Below are examples highlighting my technical expertise.

Discrete Paranoia

Brainwave-Controlled Virtual Reality

I believe this was the first example ever of a brain wave interface for navigating a 3D environment.

User/(Viewer) input was conducted via a simplified electroencephalogram (EEG) connected to the viewer's head.

Seated before the sculpture, the viewer was put to the task of using his or her mind to navigate the 3D environment presented in the top viewport. While engaged in this activity, their actions and brainwaves were monitored to determine if they were focused on the 3D viewport or not.

Once their focus was engaged, the sculpture would begin alter the output of the second display. If the animations went unnoticed, faces in the second display would begin whispering, snapping the user out of their focus. At that moment the sculpture would immediately return to its initial state. Since the viewer's mental activity was being directly monitored, only the barest impression of any change could be glimpsed before it disappeared - with no concrete evidence that any change actually occurred. Hence the name Discrete Paranoia.

Traditional Media

Visual storytelling via user-centered experiences

My romance with the arts began at a very early age, fueled by the covers of the fantasy and sci-fi novels I forever had my face buried in. Below are examples of my figiurative work in my default style, which is heavily influenced by Turner, Rembrandt, and Frazetta.

Amperity

A custom-built PHP MVC site with seamless WordPress integration

Amperity is a B2B platform that leverages AI to quantify customer data at scale. As the sole developer on the project, I built the site from the ground up using a Model-View-Controller paradigm. It features a seamlessly integrated WordPress blog, a sophisticated URL handling system, advanced .htaccess mods, and connection to a large API ecosystem that includes providers such as Hubspot, Clearbit, and Sendgrid.

The site's facade, with reduced functionality so as not to interfere with the current amperity.com site, can be viewed via the button below:
